The subject beginning about homemade rabbit trap . Continue…

To be efficient, the homemade rabbit trap should be made out of good quality lumber.

The door and the guides are the critical points, due to the fact that gravity must close the door once the trigger is tripped. Make sure that there is enough space between the guides so that the door will slide without binding.

Many people extend the guides about approximately 1 inch above trap’s top in order to support the door.

Once the door is raised and the trigger’s set, at least 2 ( the more, the better ) inches of the door should be in the guide tracks.

The opening should be 4 inches high, or more. You can adjust the height by changing the string’s length between the lever and the door.

The trigger is not that complex, though it may require some delicate tuning in order to insure a fast release once the contact is made.

This is a versatile type of trap because with little modifications in the trap’s size during the construction, it can be adapted to catch other smaller or larger animals.

When it comes down to the baiting aspect, opinions vary, some people don’t even place baits because they think that baits might attract skunks or opossums, while other use carrots, corn or apples.

Here is the materials list for building a rabbit trap:

All box parts can be built from a single 1″ x 8″ board 10 ft. long
Lever: 3/4″x 3/4″ x 181/2″
Pivot: 3/4″ x 3/4″ x 71/2″
Guides: 3/4″ x 3/4″ x height of side
Trigger: 3/8″ or 1/2″ dowel 11 inches long

Here is the blueprint for the rabbit trap:

All in all, building a rabbit trap isn’t that hard if you take things nice and slowly. Caution: traps must be used in accordance with the state in which you will be placing it. I don’t understand how trigger inside box works with dowel and trap door???

All is very simple. Pay attention to the trigger, it has special notch by which it is hooked for the top cover of box and keeps door. When the rabbit comes inside it touches this trigger and door by gravity slams. Good luck!

It looks like it is 6 inches wide and 8 inches high inside. It that big enough for wild rabbits?

I made several of these in my teens. I sometimes used hollow logs for the bodies of the traps so that they could be hidden better. I closed off the back end with wire so that I could see what I’d caught. I never used carrots for bait. Instead, I used slices of apple and a teaspoon or so of salt. The bait was placed in the back of the trap so that the rabbit would have to bump into the trigger on the way to his meal. Believe it or not, we ate the rabbits we caught this way. I’d check my traps every other day, I’d dispatch the critters with a club and take them home to clean & butcher. My mom would wash the meat, salt it and chill it overnight in the fridge. Just couldn’t beat rabbit fried then simmered in its own gravy and served with freshly made hot biscuits. Ah how the youth of today must suffer.

I just had my entire pea and bush bean crop destroyed by rabbits. I am going to build this trap and catch me some meat. I will get my protein one way or another.
