Homemade Bird Spike

A bird spikes, also known as anti-roosting spikes or roost modification, is a device consisting of long, needle-like rods used for bird control. They can be attached to building ledges, street lighting, and commercial signage to prevent wild or feral birds from perching or roosting. Birds can produce large quantities of unsightly and unhygienic feces, and some birds have very loud calls that can be inconvenient for nearby residents, especially at night. As a result, bird control spikes are used to deter these birds without causing them harm or killing them.

Materials and Tools:

-=- Strip of Wood – at least 1/2″ thick, 2 inches wide.
-=- Hammer

1. Measure the area where you want to eventually install your spikes. Make sure you get the length as well as the width from the wall or back edge to the front edge of any ledging.
2. Set up the base strip, face down. You will be hammering the nails from the back side of your mounting strip so that the nails point outwards.
3. Hammer the nails. Hammer two nails across from each other at opposing 45 degree angles (you want to get the “V” shape this way). Using two angled nails will provide more coverage and effectiveness for your bird spikes. You can even add an extra center spike for the “best” coverage. The nails in this arrangement will look like a “\|/”. Make sure you have enough width in your base to support a 3-wide nail setup.
4. Optional Paint your base + nails to match the surface they will be installed on.

Installing your Bird Spikes

Thoroughly clean the area where you want to install the bird spikes. Disinfect the area with diluted bleach or ammonia. When cleaning, be sure to wear proper protection against the diseases that may be found in bird feces. Attach the bird spikes. If the surface is brick, concrete or metal, use non-silicon construction-grade adhesive in a caulking tube. If the surface is wood, use wood screws, and adhesive can be used also for extra strength. The spikes should be placed so they’re within half an inch of the wall and so they overhang a ledge by half an inch. If a wide ledge needs two rows side by side, overlap the spikes by an inch so pigeons can’t sit between them. If you want to mount bird spikes on the wall as well as the ledge where pigeons nest the most, intermesh the wall spikes with the ledge spikes for a one inch overlap. On pipes or narrow beams, the bird spikes can also be installed with ties.
