Mice

The problem with mice is that they mature in two months and can produce up to eight litters a year. They survive well on plants, seeds, and insects, so many areas inside the home are perfect places for mice to survive. Many times home owners don’t realize they have mice until they hear the loud nibbling at night in their walls. Once it’s been established that mice have infested a home, good mice repellents are essential to rid them permanently.

One of the easiest ways to get rid of mice is to get rid their reasons for coming. It’s not just dirty, cluttered houses that attract mice; they only need a little bit of food and nesting material to make themselves at home. To discourage mice, remove all their food sources by storing grains, pet food, and other dry goods in metal containers. Make sure mice won’t find nesting material by storing all soft, fluffy material like fabric, rugs and blankets in heavy plastic or metal boxes. Mice will even chew up cardboard, paper and lightweight plastics to make nests, though, so be sure you don’t leave any lying around.

There are several natural substances that mice dislike so much that they will stay away from the area. You can soak cotton balls in a cayenne pepper solution with clove oil or peppermint, or both, and place them around known mouse infestations.

You can place little sachets of cayenne pepper and the essential oils of peppermint and clove under or inside areas where mice frequent. This is just as effective as the cotton ball method.

For outbuildings, try 1 tbsp. of Tabasco sauce mixed with 1 gallon of water, then add in 1/2 cup of dish detergent. This mixture can be sprayed inside or outside around floorboards, window frames, or any other area where mice are coming in.

In past years after being away all winter, upon returning home I have found some mouse droppings around my kitchen, Last year before leaving for the winter I sprinked massive amounts of cayenne pepper all around the baseboards and counter tops in my kitchen and laundry room. When I returned in the spring there were piles of mouse droppings everywhere! Much more then in the past. It looked like they played, ate and just loved the cayenne pepper! They made such a mess it took days to clean everything up! Recently I saw a mouse in the kitchen. I saw where it hid so I put peppermint all around the area. No more mouse signs. Not sure it worked but sure hope so. I am sorry to say but I am giving up on saving them. This year I am also setting traps and will drown them in a bucket of water. Sad to do this but I am afraid they will take over my house.
