Peppermint Oil
Douse cottons balls or cotton batting in peppermint oil. Peppermint oil is a natural deterrent. Rats cannot tolerate the odor. Make sure it is peppermint oil and not extract. Many exterminators use peppermint oil to drive rats from structures and into bags or cages. Peppermint oil can be used with number of other strong oils to maximize the oil’s effectiveness Sprinkle it along the rat’s known runs and around areas they frequent.
Rat catchers use peppermint oil to clear buildings of rats. They block their holes with peppermint oil soaked rags and drive them into nets or bags, using ferrets.
Toilet Cakes
Toilet cakes are the strong-scented deodorizing blocks that normally hang in toilet bowls to deodorize and sanitize. Much like moth balls, these pungent blocks dissipate over time. Rats hate the scent. Break the cakes into pieces and throw into the rat holes, nests and dens. Crumble together with cedar shavings to ward off rats as well as other pests.
