When looking for just the right product to repel your property from birds, there are a number of things to consider. First, what type of bird is attacking your property? What type or species of bird is important to know because the type of repellent you choose to purchase and its rate of effectiveness is directly linked to what type of bird you’re dealing with. Secondly, what type of product are you looking for?

There are a number of repellent types to choose from, from spikes, to nets, to sprays and so on. It’s up to you as the consumer to choose what repellent is right for you and your particular situation. Thirdly, are you looking for a product that will simply get the job done or are you more eco-friendly/concerned with being as humane as possible in finding a solution?

This is an important thought to ponder considering products such as bird spikes which will indeed get the job done but with bloody results compared to products that have been clinically-proven to be humane and yet prove to be just as effective. Finally, are you willing to pay out of pocket or would a home-based solution be more your taste? As serious as a bird problem may be you don’t necessarily have to spend all of your extra bucks on getting rid of them, there are plenty of forums, message boards, etc. that give people looking for a solution to their bird problem quality suggestions and recommendations that can be made right at home.

There is a spray that you can make at home, however, that has been known to successfully and safely repel birds from your plants.

1. Cut or crush the two dozen chili peppers in a small bowl. Cut them with a knife to mash well.

2. Fill an empty plastic half-gallon container with water. Add the chili peppers to the half gallon. Cover and shake well.

3. Put the half-gallon container out in the sun to ferment for five days. After that, bring it inside the house.

4. Add 1/4-cup white or red vinegar to the chili-and-water mixture. Shake it well. Now it is ready to use. Pour the mixture into the empty one-pint spray bottle.  Put the rest of the chili mixture away in storage.

5. Spray the mixture ion the plants and in the areas the birds regularly visit. The spray should work to repel the birds from eating the seeds and ruining the plants. Repeat this process every few days.

I have lived in my home for 18 years. Nothing has changed outside. This year birds started sitting on the deck rails and they are making a mess. I really hope this will help. Thanks for the great post!!!

Birds don’t digest capcaicin the active ingredient in chili peppers. This is why they sell bird treats made of pepper seeds. This is a dumb idea and probably thought up by someone selling something else.
